If your BMO wants to partner with ENABLE to strengthen its advocacy services, simply get in touch with us to enter one of our support programmes. Each programme will involve four phases of engagement:

1. Discover - As a first step we’ll help you to identify the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of your organisation. To do this ENABLE has developed a practical diagnostic toolkit that draws from best international practice. At the end of this phase, we’ll be able to highlight some priority areas we recommend you could address to strengthen your association.

2. Identify - You will now be in a position to select one advocacy project that addresses a key area of weakness that can be converted into an opportunity. We can support your advocacy needs by providing you with technical advice whether in terms of capturing the views of your members, building a coalition around an advocacy issue, planning an effective campaign, engaging the media in a cost-effective way or creating a forum to discuss your concerns with the government in a productive and focused way. In this phase, we will develop the business case for the project together. We will encourage your organisation to form a project team to focus resources on the intervention.

3. Develop - In this phase, the detailed implementation planning (resources, tasks, outputs, risk assessment etc.) will be discussed, developed and agreed by the project team. We will carefully define the ways in which we can support your organisation, agree on the measurable desired outcomes from the project, discuss and determine project risks, agree budget and support you in finalising your proposal.

4. Implement - Once the proposal has been approved, all parties to be engaged will be contracted. The project team will track the budget against actual costs and measure progress based on pre-defined milestones. The project implementation will also be evaluated to capture learnings.

We understand advocacy

To grow and prosper in a highly competitive market, companies not only need good strategies and leaders but also an enabling business environment with sound policies, laws and regulations. To achieve this, the government and the private sector in the most competitive countries in the world have learnt to dialogue and work together.

At the centre of this dialogue process are effective Business Membership Organisations (BMOs). BMOs should be able to synthesise the needs of their members, be proficient in analysing the impact of policies on competitiveness and be able to make recommendations to government that strengthen the position of both their members and also the economy overall. BMOs therefore need to be adept at the following:

• Producing (whether in-house or outsourced) economic research and analysis that is easy to grasp

• Communicating key messages using an array of communication tools and cost-effective strategies

• Bringing their members closer to the decision making process within government

At ENABLE, we know that as a leader within a BMO, you face many challenges in trying to fulfill your mandate. You might suffer from financial constraints and have issues with raising funds consistently from your members’ subscriptions; you might face hurdles getting your message out there in a cost-effective way through the media. Finally, we know that building a successful dialogue with the government presents its own challenges.
