Natalie Aylott, Environmental Change Officer, NPTCBC

I work for NPTCBC Climate Change Unit as the Environmental Change Officer, as part of my role I act as secretariat for the Environment Forum, my other duties include: Managing the Environmental Change Team. Managing the NPT Environment Strategy and developing the Climate Change Strategy and ensuring their objectives are met. Maintaining our Fairtrade County Award, Reporting on the Environment Targets in the Community Plan. Assisting the community, businesses, organisations and staff in the Council on education and awareness of the Environment and Climate Change.

I can help you, with talks, advice and guidance on environmental and sustainability issues. I can signpost you to other useful partners. I can help you with events and information. The main part of my role is about communication of what we are doing about the environment in NPT and helping people to better understand the issues that affect us locally.

Enfys Foundation receives donations of Household Items of Furniture and Electrical Goods. We have a storage warehouse and showroom and also 3 Charity shops covering NPT and Swansea. The showroom is open to the Public on Tues and Thurs between 10-00 and 16-00. We work with many social agencies who try to help people who are on low incomes, homeless or disadvantaged in some capacity that prevents them from affording household effects needed to maintain a basic standard of living. We are also in the throes of setting up accredited NVQ Training on Domestic Appliance Repairs. We do have available volunteer opportunities in the Shops, Showroom, Warehouse, Assisting on the vans and admin.

Peter Hill, NPT Mentro Allan Development Officer. BTCV Cymru

I deliver environmentally based activities to 11 – 25 yr old sedentary people as part of the Mentro Allan Programme. I also have a small core of reliable volunteers. Activities that we have so far undertaken include; Construction of artificial otter holts, assisting a toad colony migrating across a busy road in Neath as part of the Toads on Roads campaign, building and erecting species specific bird nest boxes, swabbing amphibians as part of the national Chytridiomicosis survey, surveying and recording Dragonflies & Damselflies, surveying and recording reptiles and amphibians for the NARRS, designing wildlife ponds with groups, conducting educational pond dipping workshops, delivering bushcraft workshops to groups, broadleaf tree planting with volunteers, reed planting with volunteers.

Future activities scheduled: Invasive plant species eradication i.e. Himalayan Balsam pulling; Creating a wildlife pond at the Arena Project, Pontardawe.

Recently trained in Dragonflies & Damselflies identification and surveying techniques, I am also the area representative for ARGUK. I hold a current licence allowing me to photograph/disturb protected amphibian and reptile species (granted by HCT/NARRS). I have previously worked on a habitat project for water voles and have received training in surveying for this species. I have also received training in fieldcraft and trapping techniques and the use of detectors with regard to bats (do not hold a license. I am also trained in bushcraft techniques such as shelter building and friction fire lighting.

Peter Cloke, Forest District Manager. Forestry Commission Wales

We work to manage in a sustainable way the Forestry Commission forests and woodlands of South Wales on behalf of the National Assembly for Wales. The work focuses on the stewardship of the nation’s woodlands to provide the public, businesses and other partnerships with better access to woodlands and woodland resources. By doing this the aim is for them to be used for supporting sustainable communities, for providing learning opportunities and improving health, for encouraging recreation and tourism, for stimulating economic growth and for improving the environment.

Communities First Coordinator. Neath East Communities First

I Represent Communities First. Communities’ first is a long term programme funded by WAG. The aim of the programme is to improve opportunities and quality of life in the most disadvantaged communities in Wales identified by the Welsh Index of multiple deprivation. The communities’ first partnership is made up of members of the community, voluntary organizations and statutory agencies. Neath East Communities first are based at the Melin Advice Centre.

The Trust can help with the following:

  • Environmental Action team carrying out environmental projects in communities across the Borough. Examples include community gardens, landscaping or unusable sites, murals, art and sculpture works, access works etc.
  • Positive Energy team – delivering energy advice to school’s across the Borough and available for advice for businesses on energy efficient systems;
  • Landscaping team – Landscape architects available for project design and development, implementation, help with raising funds, planning permission etc.
  • Business Development team to help groups / organisation develop business plans and funding strategies;
  • Footprint team – able to carry out physical landscape improvements.

Jenny Edwards, Assistant Manager. The Environment Centre - Swansea

The Environment Centre is here to help environmental groups in the South Wales area and to provide information regarding sustainability issues. In our visitor centre in Pier St Swansea we have a small green shop, Fairtrade coffee bar, meeting and exhibition spaces, information, office facilities, demonstrations of renewable technologies and much more.

We are an independent registered charity. Charity no. 1039378.

My role is to work with other organisations in the South West Wales area to raise the profile and understanding of environmental issues. I am an active member of a number of forums and networks. I look after our volunteer team and edit our monthly newsletter.

I can help you with advertising events etc through our networks and newsletters. Also put you in touch with environmental specialists and other services, using the Centre’s contacts. We also have an education programme, some of which is available to Neath Port Talbot schools. We can also offer a stall (information or green shop) and a Fairtrade café for local events.

Tim Orrell, Head of Centre. Margam Discovery Centre

Management of residential and day visit field study centre on Margam Park. The New discovery centre opening in September will also provide a public interpretation facility, café and a Heritage building skills training centre.
